Batgirl is also one of my favorite female super heroes. She is spurned on by a need for justice, shes not on a trip of vengeance like Batman, she didn't loose someone that made her wish to become a costumed vigilante, she just wanted to help bring justice!
The daughter of Police Commissioner Gordon, Barbra Gordon has gone through a lot. Her role as Batgirl was take from her when the Joker appeared at her door and shot her, the bullet passing straight through her spine causing the lower half of her body to be paralyzed. Now in a wheel chair she can no longer run the rooftops as Batgirl. She is a great computer hacker and becomes kinda a home base information specialist and computer hacker for the Justice League and more specifically created the Bird of Prey, an all female group. She took on the the secret identity of Oracle.
So now it appears that Batgirl has recovered from her paralysis and can once again run the rooftops of Gotham City.
Warning I will be doing a complete synopsis of Batgirl issue #1, if you don't want the story spoiled for you I suggest that you go pick up the copy and read issue, the come back and check out my review!
The cover of Batgirl issue 1, featuring Batgirl in her costume. While the style hasn't really changed they have modernized it by giving it an armored look, and the color of the inside of her cape is purple instead of its usual yellow.
Plot:
We start of with a mansion, a man seen watering his plants, while a hand of unknown belonging holds a list of names with one crossed off .
The man watering his lawn is approached by this person (the hand). The person tells him that he survived the sinking of a transport ship off of the coast of Portugal during routine maneuvers in calm conditions, and twenty seven of his fellow sailors did not. The man asks who they are, and the person flourishes their cape stating I am the Mirror, who then grabs the hose out of the mans hands and grabs the back of his head and basically drowns the man.
We are then shown as he crosses another name off the list, that Barbara Gordon is on the bottom of that list.
we are then taken to Gotham. Batgirl narrates that she must remember she is not Barbra Gordon, while she looks on to a situation she wishes to stop. Stating she looked over private police files when her father wasn't looking and found the criminals in the file, she grapples off the roof and states in a narrative pride, I am Batgirl!
We are then taken into an apartment, a man and woman are being held at gunpoint by a couple people wearing Halloween masks. These people are murderers and even take the time to show them there "scrapbook" of previous endeavors. While one looks out the window as there terrorizing the couple, he states its going to rain an forgot his jacket. He turns back to his friends not seeing the bat silhouette now approaching the window. Batgirl smashes through, taking out a couple of the men, getting down to the last one holding the gun to the couple. Batgirl decides to take a chance and distract him by mocking him, and then throws a batarang at his gun hand making a direct hit. The man gets upset and tackles Batgirl taking them off the balcony. Batgirl regains the upper hand grabbing him and the railing before he falls then handcuffs the man to the balcony, with a couple of batarangs in his hands to keep him still, warning him not to take them out till the police and the medics show up. She then takes off.
We are then given a short re accounting of the assault of Joker that paralyzed her, and we see it was actually Barbara having a nightmare. She goes down stairs and meets with her father who says she doesn't have to go, she can continue living with him. She states its something she has to do.
She goes to an apartment meets her new roommate and starts moving her stuff in, and we learn her roommate is an activist.
W are then taken to the hospital, where the man from the attempted murder the night previous rests, with cops watching.
Were taken to the front desk where the same cloaked man from the beginning appears and starts attacking people through out the hospital.
Barbara gets a text, saying that she secretly routed her dads text alerts the her phone and she tells her roommate she has to go, revealing her motorcycle.
We are shown Batgirl racing to the scene.
The two cops watching the man are watching the door, guns in hand as the cloaked man has been shooting people. He shoots through the door hitting both cops and comes through the door showing the man in the hospital bed his fears, stating the man should have fallen, he is on the list.
Batgirl busts in on her bike and tells him hes not getting away.
The cloaked man turns and points the gun right where Batgirl was shot, that caused her to be paralyzed. This caused her to freeze, giving the man in the cloak time to push the man in the hospital bed out the window and turns and points the gun back at Batgirl, who is now being called a murder by the female cop still alive, who states that she let the man push him out the window and Batgirl did nothing.
And that is the end of issue one!
So I am interested to see more. The Mirror (a villain I am not familiar with) is obviously on some "godsend" mission taking out people who survived where he feels they shouldn't have. But it was interesting that one Barbara Gordon, was on his list and two that he pointed the gun directly at the spot she was shot previously by the Joker!
I have noticed that the Batman originated comics are trying to keep to more the classic style of comics, with a more modern look, which I think is great!
I enjoyed this title, even though it wasn't one the original titles that I was planning on reviewing it was good an I will probably continue on to read more of Batgirl.
I suggest picking one up!
Well I am caught up on my reviews for now, gotta wait for next weeks to come out and then hopefully the second prints from last week will come out soon so I can review those.
